Farmhouse Inns ice cream counter

Ice Cream at Middlemarch Farm,

If you’ve visited a Farmhouse Inns, you’re probably already pretty familiar with our famous Ice Cream Parlour. The rumours are true: from a single-scoop treat to a triple-stacked cone with all the toppings, we’re serious about the sweet stuff.

But what you might not know is that our ice cream has been on quite the adventure before it makes it to your table! So, buckle in, because we’re about to take you on a journey spanning decades...

Beechdean Farms

Where it all began

Beechdean Dairies was founded in June of 1989 by Andrew and Susie Howard, who met at university where the pair were studying Agricultural Science. Susie's farming family had been producing top-notch milk for 30 years, so an ice cream business seemed like a perfect fit!

Meet the Beechdean girls

The Jersey cows (known as “the girls”) get the royal treatment, which means creamier, richer milk — perfect for tasty ice cream! From sleeping on mattresses and enjoying regular back scratches to having music played to them while they’re milked, the girls are totally pampered.

The real deal

Coming a long way from 1989, Beechdean now make up to 10,000 litres of ice cream per hour, and every single scoop is gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians. They’re also free from artificial flavourings, colourings and additives, so the whole family can enjoy a scoop (or two!)
