Five things to do on a rainy day with kids

There’s no two ways about it, a thundery shower or day-long deluge can quickly turn plans for a family beach trip or a picnic in the park into a soggy mess. But just because the weather’s gloomy, doesn’t mean you have to be cooped up at home!

Keeping the kids entertained when the rain clouds roll in can be a challenge, but it’s also an opportunity to get creative and plan an alternative activity. After all, since British weather is famously temperamental, it pays to have a plan B. From immersive strolls through museums to competitive rounds of mini golf, there are plenty of indoor activities that can turn a dreary day into a fun-filled adventure. We’ve rounded up five fantastic activities that’ll keep the little ones happy and busy, no matter how hard it’s pouring outside – including visiting a pub with soft play. So, let’s take a raincheck on boredom and dive straight in!

Play adventure golf

Who says you need sunshine to have a tee-rific time? Indoor adventure golf is a fantastic way to weather the storm, and it’s perfect for all ages. Whether you’re wading through a jungle, exploring a pirate ship, or even putting your way through a space station, the themes are endless and no two courses are the same!

The little ones will love the colourful, interactive setups, while older kids (and let’s be honest, the adults too) will enjoy the challenge of tricky holes and fun obstacles. It’s a great way to have a laugh and some friendly competition, making it a perfect family bonding activity.

You’ll find mini golf courses across the country, and just like bowling, many adventure golf venues also have arcades and VR experiences. So, there’s plenty to stick around for even after you’ve tallied up the scores!

Visit a museum

When the kids are off school and the rain’s pouring down, museums are a parent’s best friend. They’re packed with interactive, educational and fun, and that means they’re ideal for keeping the kids entertained. There’s something for every little explorer, whether they’re into space, sports, or dinosaurs.

We think the Natural History Museum is one of the best places to wile away a stormy day in central London, and it’s one the kids certainly won’t forget. Just watch their eyes light up at the sight of towering dinosaur skeletons and ancient fossils -it’s like stepping into a time machine!

For those curious about how things work, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester is a must-visit. With hands-on exhibits about space and technology, the kids will be so busy having fun they won’t even realise they’re learning.

If you’re raising a fan of the beautiful game, the National Football Museum in Manchester is a real open goal opportunity. They can check out the match-worn shirts of their heroes, learn about the history of the game, and even show off their skills in interactive challenges.

While you’re in the area, head over to Coppice Wood Farm in Urmston! After a morning of exploration with the family, kick back, relax, and tuck into our tasty carvery serving up 14-hour slow roasted meats with all the trimmings. Don’t forget to grab a slice of deliciously indulgent cake for the road from our Cakeaway too.

If you’re in the Midlands and fancy something a bit different, head to the Black Country Living Museum and leave the 21st century behind for the day. The kids will get the chance to ride vintage trams, try out traditional games, and even watch live demos of old-fashioned crafts and trades!

And if history doesn’t sweeten the deal, how about a trip to Cadbury World instead? A favourite for both kids and adults, here they can learn all about their favourite sweet treat, watch the magic of chocolate-making in action and, of course, do some taste testing! That’ll brighten up any rainy day.

Go bowling

Bowling is a blast for the whole family, rain or shine! Whether your kids are little ones or teens, it doesn’t matter. Bowling alleys are perfect for a rainy day adventure, with ramps, bumpers and lightweight balls to help the younger kids knock down those pins without any frustration.

For the older kids and adults, it's game on! Challenge each other to see who can score the most strikes and spares. Most bowling alleys also have arcades too, so even if you lose the main event, you can still claw back some pride on air hockey or Mario Kart!

Explore an aquarium

When it's pouring outside, zoos definitely aren’t the best option, but aquariums? Now, that's a different story! Aquariums are ideal for rainy day adventures as they’re almost entirely indoors, and they offer a fascinating peek into the underwater world.

The Kids will be mesmerised by the colourful fish, graceful sharks, and playful sea otters. Plus, aquariums are a great educational opportunity. They can learn about different marine species, their habitats, and the importance of conservation in a fun, inspiring, and engaging way.

There are some fantastic aquariums across the country worth visiting. The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is the largest in the UK and has both incredible displays and interactive exhibits. SEA LIFE London is right on the South Bank opposite the Houses of Parliament, and offers the chance to see everything from tiny seahorses to enormous rays up close. For those in the North, Blue Planet Aquarium in Cheshire has an amazing underwater tunnel that lets you walk right under the sharks!
