Your Guide to the Pub Carvery
What is a carvery?
Usually found in pubs across the UK, a carvery consists of roasted meats sliced to order. This meat is then joined by trimmings that include roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and seasonal vegetables like peas, carrots and parsnips – plus lashings of gravy!
Why is it called a carvery?
The name “carvery” simply comes from the act of carving the meat. Serving a roast dinner like this originated in the 1950s in England. It’s believed to have started when a helpful waitress began carving meat for her pub’s customers at an extra charge.
By the 1970s, carveries had begun to pop up all around the UK, where specific carvery chefs would cook and carve up the meat for guests every day. We love carveries here at Farmhouse Inns, and that’s why it’s our goal to serve up the best carvery near you, wherever you are in the country
How does a carvery work?
Each carvery is different, but in most cases you either start by ordering at the bar or at your table. Then, you’ll simply grab a plate before heading to the buffet-style carvery deck. Here, you’ll decide which meat you want and the chef will carve it for you and add it to your plate.
Then continue through to fill your plate with all the trimmings you want. Here’s where you’ll find things like seasonal veg, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and more. Once you’ve got a full plate, return to your table and enjoy the roast dinner you’ve just put together for yourself.
At Farmhouse Inns, our carvery options start with selecting a plate size. This determines just how hungry you are. Adults choose between standard, small or large depending on their carvery cravings, while our younger guests have the option of a junior carvery.
What’s more, if you and the family can’t make it in for a Sunday carvery near you – or any other day of the week – we offer a takeaway carvery. Simply order ahead and swing by to pick up your family meal. Or you can have it dropped off at your door when you use our trusted delivery partners to deliver your carvery.
What meats do you get at a carvery?
Depending on the area the carvery is in, the time of year or the chef’s preference, the meats on offer can vary drastically. You’ll often have the choice between meats like beef, pork, gammon or turkey. Other options can include lamb, chicken or even seafood.
The meats we offer at Farmhouse Inns adhere closely to the classics, with juicy beef and gammon joints as well as succulent pork and turkey options. They’re always slow-roasted over 14 hours and carved to perfection by our chefs.
For vegetarians, we also offer a cheese and potato pie, which is bursting with fillings and flavour.
Is a carvery the same as a Sunday roast?
All carveries are roast dinners, but not all roast dinners are carveries. A standard roast dinner can be ordered from most pubs, which will be prepared in the kitchen and brought to your table. This isn't the case at a carvery.
Carveries are down to you to decide what’s on your plate. Which meats, which veg or all of the trimmings. You can also place your order quickly and get your food straight away. That’s what makes a carvery so enticing, especially if you’ve got a hungry family to feed.
